Literature Text

A high pitched screaming sound, so piercing it made everything unbearable. He couldn’t think, he couldn’t see, he couldn’t move, all the conscript could do was lay there in the charred remains of his transport clutching at his ears in a vain attempt to drown out the intense noise.
A noise like he had never heard before, as if a thousand jet engines had been fired up against his ears, growing more and more intense. He was sure his head would explode from the sheer volume. Just as it was reaching the height of its painful frequencies the sound faltered, dropping momentarily to a much different sound as if in pain, then silence.
As his ears became painfully accustomed to the sudden quiet his vision came to focus, a dark object silhouetted by the distant moonlight. Gradually the shiny features began to emerge, the face and eyes of a huge beast motionless and more importantly lifeless.
Three oil black eyes set in an emerald green wall of jagged scales. The rows of scales gradually increased in size, until they halted at the mouth. Six long blood soaked teeth poked out from beneath, each one razor sharp. The drool and blood dripping from these teeth at an absurd angle made the conscript suddenly aware of the head’s position, hanging down by a long neck from where its body was resting on the smouldering remains of the ship’s hull.
Movement distracted his line of vision, only then did he realise the pure silence. A soldier crawled towards him, he could see the face screaming at him and pointing, but no sound registered in his head. Like a silent movie, he watched the soldier start to pull at his webbing in an attempt to move him. The creatures face began to move away, he realised he was being dragged slowly up the side of the smoking crater.
An enormous eruption of fire accompanied by an astounding crashing noise of exploding earth, metal and glass marked the return of his hearing. He had stopped moving. Lifting his head up, he turned to look at where the other soldier had been, nothing, just a haze of smoke and blood stained sand. Another blast was the last thing he saw before slipping into a dark unconsciousness.
This is the opening of the first book of my X.A.R series
